Mural Artist Wanted for The Women’s Mural Project:Celebrating the Significance of Black Suffragists and Black Women in Englewood

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND 
The Women’s Rights Information Center, Metro Community Center, and the Woman’s Club of Englewood are partnering with the Northern New Jersey Community Foundation’s ArtsBergen initiative to bring to fruition The Women’s Mural Project: Celebrating the Significance of Black Suffragists and Black Women in Englewood in downtown Englewood, NJ.
 
The mural project aims to capture and elevate the stories of Black women in Englewood as they relate to the lives and accomplishments of the Black suffragists. The mural will celebrate their voices, raise awareness of the Black suffragists, and promote civil discourse within the community and in greater Bergen County. 
 
A professional muralist will be selected to design and paint the mural incorporating content contributions from the Englewood community. Residents will participate in the mural design process through workshops where participants will learn about the history of Black Suffragists and relate their journeys to personal experiences. Sharing stories and perspectives will capture community vision and imagery for the mural.
 
ArtsBergen promotes the integration of arts and culture into the fabric of communities through an arts-based planning process called creative placemaking. This grassroots approach promotes pride of place, belonging, and equity by allowing the community itself to create public spaces whose architecture and activities reflect their authentic voices, character, and culture. We are seeking a muralist who understands the value and priority of community visioning and meaningful inclusion in the artistic process. The artist must be able to collect and authentically interpret cultural information from the Englewood community with specific focus on the experiences of its Black women.
 
PROJECT’S GOALS
  • To interpret the impact of Black suffragists on Black women in Englewood and engage all residents through the showcasing of public art along the Palisade Avenue corridor. 
  • To create a public artwork that incorporates, expresses, and celebrates community voices. 
  • To enlighten passersby, residents, theater-goers, transit riders, and visitors with engaging public art intended to spark discourse.
  • To endorse arts and culture as a powerful tool to transform, connect, and serve the City of Englewood and beyond. 
  • To provide job opportunities for area artists that display their work via public outlets.
PROJECT LOCATION 
The mural will be painted on the east-facing wall of the Women’s Rights Information Center’s building at 108 Palisade Avenue, Englewood, NJ. The wall is painted brick approximately 520 sq. ft. with dimensions 20’ w and 26’ h. The location is in the center of one of Bergen County’s most heavily trafficked downtowns.
 
ARTIST SCOPE OF WORK 
The selected artist is responsible for the design, wall preparation, painting, and sealing of the mural. Use of a lift will be provided. The artist will determine the content of the mural through attending community workshops.
 
Artist Responsibilities
With support from ArtsBergen and Project Partners, Artist will:
  • Develop a basic understanding of African American history in Englewood, NJ.
  • Develop a design concept that is inspired by the lives and significance of the Black Suffragists and Black women in Englewood.
  • Participate in two public meetings to listen to community stories and facilitate any needed activities to glean mural content.
  • Incorporate the stories/vision and feedback from partners to finalize the design.
  • Attend up to three planning and/or check-in meetings with partners (virtual or in-person).
  • Present two draft concepts to partners for feedback and selection.
  • Translate approved final design into a large-scale mural for installation on site.
  • Plan and implement the installation of the mural and collaborate with ArtsBergen and partners to complete the artwork within the contracted supply budget and schedule in Spring 2022.
  • Attend the mural dedication during Juneteeth week 2022.
ARTIST ELIGIBILITY AND QUALIFICATIONS
We are seeking an artist or artist team who is knowledgeable of creative placemaking and/or have experience working closely with community members using a collaborative creative process to translate community input into public art. Women artists culturally connected to the subject matter are strongly encouraged to apply. Local artists are encouraged to apply. Any experience facilitating dialogue around social justice issues is a plus. Artists must be citizens of the United States or have United States work authorization. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

INSURANCE
Artist must be currently self-insured or acquire the proper insurance if selected.
 
COMPENSATION
One artist or artist team will be selected. The selected artist or team will be paid an artist fee of $20,000 in total for, planning meetings, participation in community workshops, mural design, wall preparation, painting, and sealing of the mural. There is a separate supply budget of $1,500 and use of a lift.
 
ESTIMATED TIMELINE (subject to change)
Applications Due: September 10, 2021
Artist Selection:  The week of September 20, 2021
Project Development and Community Engagement:  September 20 – October, 31 2021
Draft Concepts Presented to Committee:   December 1, 2021
Final Design Process:  December 2 – April 2022
Painting Begins/Installation:  Late May or early June 2022
Project Completion:  By week of June 13, 2022
Mural Dedication:  Week of Juneteeth 2022
 
TO APPLY
ArtsBergen is collecting submissions of interested applicants. Artist(s) will be chosen by a selection committee comprised of representatives of ArtsBergen, The Women’s Rights Information Center, Metro Community Center, The Woman’s Club of Englewood, the Englewood Black community, the arts community, and the City:
  • Artistic excellence and quality, skill and technique level.
  • The ability to facilitate community-driven arts projects and create a culturally relevant concept.
  • Prior experience completing permanent, site-specific, outdoor mural projects.
  • Presentation of application.
